NSW: Doctor-assisted births end at Camden hospital
The New South Wales government says women will no longer be able to have doctor-assisted
births at Camden hospital in Sydney's south-west.
State Health Minster MORRIS IEMMA says women will have to give birth at Campbelltown
hospital until a new midwife-led model is put in place at Camden.
The changes come just two years after the state government spent $20 million redeveloping
Camden's maternity unit, which opened just before the March 2003 election.
But a dramatic decrease in births, and specialist shortages in areas such as anaesthetics,
have made the maternity ward unsustainable in the long term.
Camden Hospital will continue to deliver ante- and post-natal care services.
